Anglers, businessmen get Soldiers hooked on fishing
John Pennell
Fort Richardson PAO
FORT RICHARDSON, Alaska – With the rapid pace of operations since the start of the Global
War on Terrorism, many Soldiers assigned to Alaska spend the majority of their time training or
deployed. They don’t always get a chance to enjoy activities most Alaskans take for granted – like
fishing.
But thanks to a few local anglers and businessmen, the opportunities are slowly growing; not only
in number, but also in affordability.
In one such case, five single Soldiers were treated to a day of guided salmon fishing Aug. 5 on the
Little Susitna River by Fisherman’s Choice Charters, from Willow, in conjunction with Fort
Richardson’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program.
While the trip happened because of dedicated volunteer work, it had its genesis with a program
conceived by a dedicated Soldier-fisherman in Texas – Staff Sgt. Mike Nashif, Headquarters Service
Battery, 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood.
The program is a nationwide department of Combat Warrior Crisis Network, an official Affiliate
Subordinate Ministry legally operating under the group exemption of Chaplain Fellowship
Ministries International Inc., a legally incorporated 501 (c) 3 Federal Tax Exempt Non-Profit Public
Charity.
The Alaska trip, one of several Fisherman’s Choice and other individual anglers have offered,
started when Nashif introduced his TASF program to state anglers via the Internet and the Alaska
Outdoors Directory’s Alaska Fishing Forum.
At Fisherman’s Choice, office manager and guide Terri Studnicka said the business also decided
to volunteer spaces on their boats after reading one of Nashif’s postings.
“The service members not only bust their humps, but they put their lives on the line for our
freedom,” she said. “Without them, where would we be?
“The service members love to be able to get away from their combat boots and put on some
wading boots, not only to catch fish, but to get away and soak up a little R&R, fun and see things
only seen on the Alaskan rivers,” she said.
Charter owner Ray Blodgett took the most recent group of Soldiers fishing for silver salmon on
the popular, but sometimes hard to fish, Little Susitna, with the group of five anglers bringing home
six fish. The excursion was Sgt. Jason Tempke’s third fishing trip in six months of being stationed in
Alaska. Tempke is assigned to Fort Richardson’s Warrior Transition Unit and said he enjoyed the
offer of free fishing.
“It’s awesome. I had a great time,” he said. “It’s beautiful out here; I love getting out here.”
For Spc. Brad Urban of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, the trip gave him
something he probably wouldn’t have given himself – a true taste of the Alaska experience.
“For a guy living in the barracks, who has a car payment and insurance and (a) cell phone
payment and whatever other payments they’ve got, it’s a godsend,” he said. “Number one, it gets
them out of the barracks and gives them a day off from work during the week. I’ve experienced a
good part of Alaska, but I’ve never experienced this.
“I’ve never caught a silver,” he said. “I had a great experience today. When you get to fish in
Alaska, it heightens your experience. When you’re up here in the barracks, the best part is getting
out and doing stuff.”
For Spc. Jason Biggs, also from the 1-501st, his first time fishing in Alaska came at the end of his
assignment and his active-duty Army career. He is set to return to Florida, where he plans to join
the National Guard.
“It was really nice that they could help us out and hook us up with this,” Biggs said. “It’s good
that they look out for the Soldiers.
“This was a great trip,” he continued. “I’ve been up here for four-and-a-half years, and this is my
first time fishing up here. I had a blast.”

Thanks so much!
To the folks at Fisherman's Choice;
My husband,
daughter and I researched a trip to Alaska before coming and settled on four
"special" events. We wanted to go salmon fishing, ocean kayaking, white water
rafting and horseback riding in addition to our scenic driving and RV camping.
It was our good fortune to choose Fisherman's Choice for the salmon fishing.
Brian was our guide and with his help we got 2 large king salmon on June 23rd on
the Talkeetna River. Based on the number of fishermen that day who were not
getting fish or losing ones they had hooked, we were very appreciative
of Brian's expert instruction and choice of gear. Those two large salmon were
the main staples of our diet for the rest of the vacation! Thank you for the
opportunity to experience the best of Alaska - we will certainly recommend your
charter company to anyone traveling to your beautiful state!
(and that
includes us because we will definitely return!)
Sincerely,
~Mary Ann

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful service and the memories of our great
fishing trip.
I thought you might enjoy a little back ground on how we
decided on your services as well as how important this trip was to both Ardus
and I. Ardus Haymen has been fishing since she was five (5) years old. She is
considered by most to be one of the premier anglers in northern Maine. She holds
a number of local records including a record 52 Lake trout (ranging from 4
pounds up to 13 pounds) caught in one season. She also has a trophy Lake Trout
mounted that exceeds 14 pounds taken from East Grand lake in Northern
Maine.
All of that being said, in her own words, "nothing can compare to
catching that 35 pound King Salmon" . She has wanted to Fish in Alaska for a
King for the past 40 years. Finally, at the age of 73, you helped make that
happen. It was clear to me, after reviewing your website and gathering info on
all the options we had for guide services, that your services were second to
none. I felt from the beginning that we would be well cared for and if there was
going to be any fish catching going on, you would be the one who could get us in
the right place. My estimation of you and your staff proved to be correct.

I do appreciate all that you and your wonderful staff did to make the
trip a success!

" 'Once in a lifetime' seems appropriate when describing my Alaskan Trout fishing experience with Fisherman’s Choice Charters (Captain Ray). He told me that he’d find where the Trout were hiding and he did! He found LOTS of them! Ok, so I lied about the 'Once in a lifetime' thing, ‘cause I’m going back!" ~~Steve Weasel, Cape Coral, FL
"I have had the opportunity to be on several guided boats on both coasts over the years-but your operation is by far superior to any that I have fished with. Many-many thanks for a most memorable fishing weekend!" ~~ Eric Roth, Dove Canyon, CA
"My wife loves fishing with Fisherman's Choice because they offer instruction that doesn't make her feel like a beginner. I love fishing with them because they know where to find the big fish. If you want to catch fish call Fisherman's Choice!" ~~ Jeff & Donna Logan, Anchorage, AK

"When I want a change of pace from fishing huge marlin and tuna, I head for the beauty of Alaska with Fisherman's Choice. Here I find myself hip deep in Salmon combining a picture postcard setting with outstanding fishing. What more could any fisherman want?!" ~~ Marsha Bierman (World Renowned Big Game Angler!), Plantation, FL
"You certainly know where and when to catch fish. The fishing techniques you shared with us were really creative, and the reason we limited out both days." ~~ Bill Alexander, Hopewell Junction, NY
"Thanks again for the great days of fishing-the colored sockeyes were everything we hoped for and more (and you certainly surpassed our expectations as a guide as well!) We will be back!" ~~ Loren and Todd Grosskopf, Atlanta, GA
"For ten years I've taken my family and friends with Fisherman's Choice. If the fish are in the river, Captain Ray knows where to find them! It's a pleasure to fish with a guide who works hard and is respectful of his clients." ~~ James Rowe, Anchorage, AK
